Bruins Give Wideman Contract Extension; Place Murray On Waivers

POSTED: 7:26 pm PDT July 23, 2008

(Sports Network) - The Boston Bruins signed defenseman Dennis Wideman to a multi-year contract extension. Per team policy, terms were not disclosed.

Wideman posted career-highs with 13 goals, 23 assists and 36 points in 81 games for the Bruins in 2007-08. He placed second to team captain and fellow backliner Zdeno Chara in points by a defenseman.

The 25-year-old was acquired by Boston from St. Louis for forward Brad Boyes on February 27, 2007. Over a three-year NHL career with the Blues and Bruins, Wideman has compiled 27 goals, 85 points and 224 penalty minutes in 223 games.

The team also placed veteran forward Glen Murray on waivers.

Originally selected 18th overall by the Bruins in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft, Murray, 35, registered 17 goals and 13 assists in 63 games last season.

A native of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Murray has 337 goals and 314 assists in 1,009 career games with Boston, Pittsburgh and Los Angeles.
