An El Cajon man who was drunk and had methamphetamine in his system when he caused a crash near Ramona that killed two men and injured a woman was sentenced Friday to 16 years in prison.

Shannon Shimp, 36, was convicted Sept. 18 of two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter, DUI causing injury and driving with a blood-alcohol level of .08 percent or higher in connection with the crash that occurred July 22, 2008, on state Route 78.

A passenger in Shimp's pickup truck, Joseph Edwards, 52, of Ramona, and Ian Kinney, 19, of Julian, who was driving a Lexus, died.

Kinney's girlfriend, Tessa Medearis of Vista, had to be cut from the sedan and was hospitalized. Shimp suffered only minor injuries.

Witnesses testified that Shimp was driving eastbound about 6 p.m. when he tried to pass several vehicles, but lost control and skidded into the Lexus, which ended up beneath the pickup.

Shimp had a blood-alcohol level of .19 percent -- more than twice the legal limit for driving -- two hours after the crash.
