A bomb squad was sent to an East Village thrift store Tuesday to investigate the discovery of an object that resembled a hand grenade but turned out to be a harmless replica.

An employee at Goodwill Industries, 939 16th St., reported finding the suspicious-looking item in a box of donated goods shortly before 3:30 p.m., SDPD Detective Gary Hassen said.

Personnel with the San Diego Metro Arson Strike Team arrived at the store several minutes later and quickly determined the green-painted object was not a real explosive device, Hassen said.
