Friends, Family Honor 4 Marines Killed In Afghanistan

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. -- Grieving family members and Marines gathered Monday to honor the service of four Camp Pendleton-based air-crew members killed last month in a helicopter collision over southern Afghanistan.The late-morning ceremony in a chapel at the northern San Diego County USMC station honored Cpl. Gregory M.W. Fleury and Capts. Eric A. Jones, David S. Mitchell and Kyle R. Van De Giesen.Early on the morning of Oct. 26, a UH-1N Huey with Fleury and Jones aboard crashed into an AH-1 Cobra carrying Mitchell and Van De Giesen in Helmand Province, according to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing's public affairs office. The cause of the collision is under investigation.
Jones and Van De Giesen, both 29, and Fleury, 23, were assigned to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 169, Marine Aircraft Group 39, 3rd MAW, I Marine Expeditionary Force. Mitchell, 30, was assigned to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 367, Marine Aircraft Group 39, 3rd MAW, I Marine Expeditionary Force.Fleury hailed from Anchorage, Alaska; Jones from Westchester, N.Y.; Mitchell from Loveland, Ohio; and Van De Giesen from North Attleboro, Mass.
