Finalists Chosen In Panda Naming Contest

SAN DIEGO -- More than 6,300 people submitted possible names this month for the male panda born this summer at the San Diego Zoo, according to a zoo spokeswoman.Half of the 6,331 submissions made earlier this month were collected through the zoo's Web site, while the other half were delivered in-person at the zoo, according to San Diego Zoo spokeswoman Yadira Galindo.Saturday, the zoo posted on its Web site the five top submissions chosen by zoo officials. The public will then have until next Tuesday to vote for a favorite. The name with the most votes will be announced during a Nov. 17 ceremony at the zoo.
The five finalists are:
“FU SHENG” which means “Blissful San Diego "XIAO LONG” which means “Little Dragon” “XIONG WEI” which means “Extraordinary Bear” “YONG XAING” which means “Eternally Blessed” “YUN ZI” which means “Son of CloudTo vote for your favorite name, go to The San Diego Zoos website.In accordance with Chinese tradition, giant panda cubs are not named until they are 100 days old.The now-10.4-pound cub was born at the San Diego Zoo Aug. 5, the fifth offspring of 18-year-old Bai Yun. Her first cub, Hua Mei, was born in 1999, followed by Mei Sheng in 2003, Su Lin in 2005 and Zhen Zhen in 2007.Zoo officials said they didn't know Bai Yun was pregnant until about a week before her fifth cub was born. Panda pregnancies typically last from 85 to 130 days.
