San Diego Gas & Electric will use a $28.1 million federal economic stimulus grant to fund a wireless smart grid project, it was announced Tuesday.

SDG&E's so-called "Advanced Smart Grid Communications System," which will cost $60 million to build, will eventually connect 1.4 million meters to the utility through a wireless network.

The funding was part of a $3.4 billion package of economic stimulus grants announced today by President Barack Obama through the U.S. Department of Energy.

The grants, which are intended to spur the modernization of the nation's power grid, went to 100 private companies, utilities, manufacturers and cities around the country.

SDG&E has also submitted an application for a federal economic stimulus grant to fund a smart grid demonstration project. Utility officials said they expect to get the results of that application in December.
