High-Speed Chase Ends In Gillespie Field Stolen Car Crash

A 35-year-old man led officers Tuesday on a high-speed chase that ended when the stolen car he was driving crashed through a fence and into a vintage airplane at Gillespie Field, ending up in a hangar, police said.

The chase began around 1 a.m. after an El Cajon patrol officer pulled over Patrick Michael Ray for speeding, El Cajon police Sgt. Pete Faubel said.

After the officer got out of his car, Ray sped off, Faubel said.

Ray was driving north in excess of 100 mph on Johnson Avenue, near Bradley Avenue, when he lost control while making a right turn, Faubel said.

The vehicle went across a ravine and onto the tarmac at Gillespie Field, he said.

The car then crashed into a vintage airplane, breaking one of its wings, before slamming into a hangar, damaging an antique car stored there, Faubel said.

Ray was treated at a hospital for moderate injuries suffered in the crash, he said. There were no other injuries.

Ray, who is named in an unspecified warrant, was arrested and booked into county jail on suspicion of car theft and felony evading, Faubel said.
