Man Runs Mira Mesa Red Light, Kills Nurse, 24

POSTED: 6:54 am PDT June 3, 2009

Friends and family Wednesday are mourning a 24-year-old nurse who was fatally injured in a two-car crash in Mira Mesa.

Kara Marie Franco was driving alone in a 2006 Honda Civic when she turned left at the intersection of Camino Ruiz and Carroll Canyon Road around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday and was struck by a vehicle that blew through a red light, the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office reported.

Paramedics took Franco to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival, the Medical Examiner's Office reported.

The driver of the other vehicle, a 73-year-old man, was also taken to a hospital but he is expected to recover, San Diego police said.

Franco was single and lived with her family in Mira Mesa. She worked as a nurse at Kaiser Hospital, according to the Medical Examiner's Office.
