Donovan Escapee Surrenders To Authorities

POSTED: 4:38 pm PDT August 26, 2008

An inmate who escaped from Donovan State Prison Sunday evening surrendered Tuesday at his sister's home in San Diego, a Corrections Department official said.

Manuel Casillas, 24, was taken into custody by a state agent about 2 p.m., Lt. Michael Stout of the prison said.

Casillas, who was serving time for burglary, apparently climbed a 6-foot fence at the Otay Mesa prison between 6 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Sunday, when guards discovered he was missing from a dormitory in the lockup's lowest security area.

Casillas was in a section that includes two dormitories reserved for nonviolent offenders serving no more than two years. He had been scheduled to be paroled in late October, according to Stout.

"But now he'll be faced with a new felony charge -- escaping from a state prison," the lieutenant said.

That charge usually brings about two additional years' confinement, Stout said.
