Failed Pump Causes Sewage Spill

A San Diego County beach had to be closed for much of the weekend after a failed pump released about 1,000 gallons of sewage that flowed down Highway 101 and into a storm drain.

The county's Department of Environmental Health said about 100 gallons of the sewage made it into the water at Carlsbad State Beach, which was closed after the Saturday night spill.

The agency said the beach would remain closed until samples showed it was safe to enter.

The county's Web site listed the beach as open on Monday morning.
