A motorist who fled a traffic stop led officers on a 15-minute chase Monday from the East County to Imperial Beach, where he got into a rollover crash and made a failed attempt to escape on foot, authorities said.

The chase began shortly before 3:30 p.m. near Noeline Avenue and Carlsbad Street in the Skyline area when an officer tried to pull over the driver of a 1998 Honda Accord for a seatbelt violation, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The motorist drove off to the south over surface streets before entering state Route 54 and continuing to flee to the west, then south on Interstate 5, CHP public affairs Officer Larry Landeros said.

He exited Interstate 5 at Palm Avenue and continued to the west and north until an officer used a CHP cruiser to nudge the silver Honda and make it skid to a stop.

The maneuver caused the car to spin out and overturn at Cypress Avenue and 12th Street. The man then got out of the upside-down sedan and tried to run off, but was stopped by an officer's electric stun gun.

No injuries were reported, Landeros said.
