Wrong-way driver dead in Miramar crash

MIRAMAR - A man who was driving his SUV against oncoming traffic on a Miramar freeway died after a collision with a U.S. Postal Service box truck early Friday morning.

The crash occurred before 2 a.m. on State Route 163, near the State Route 52 interchange. California Highway Patrol reports the victim was driving north in the southbound lanes of the freeway in a Nissan Xterra. A USPS box truck traveling north tried to swerve to avoid the Xterra, but the two vehicles collided and the truck rolled over.

The driver of the Xterra was pronounced dead at the scene.  The truck driver was not seriously hurt.

The southbound lanes of SR-163 were still shut down as of 5:30 a.m. while emergency crews cleared the scene.

The name of the victim was not released. CHP is investigating.
