A young woman's arm was severed in a suspected drunken driving scooter crash Wednesday morning in Carlsbad.

The 19-year-old lost control of her scooter and crashed into a street sign alongside Cannon Road near Hemingway Drive around 3:45 a.m., according to a Carlsbad police statement. A witness said she was speeding on a turn, then hit the median and sign.

Arriving officers found her with severe injuries to her left side and applied a tourniquet to control the bleeding, police said.

The woman, whose name was not released, was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, but was later transferred to UC San Diego Medical Center, police said.
