SAN DIEGO - A woman was pulled unconscious from San Diego Bay just north of the USS Midway pier early Sunday.
San Diego Harbor Police received a call just before 1 a.m. reporting that a woman was in the water just north of the USS Midway pier. When Harbor Police arrived on scene, they found an unconscious woman floating in the water.
A male bystander had jumped into the water in an attempt to assist the woman and was yelling for help, according to Harbor Police.
The bystander was later identified as Navy serviceman Josh Erickson. According to witnesses, he and his wife were walking along the Embarcadero at about 12:45 a.m. when they heard a scream and saw a woman face down in the water. Erickson jumped into the bay and tried to rescue her.
"I ran around, jumped into the pier and then jumped in the water and tried to grab her," said Erickson. "Soon as I got to her, it didn't look like she was alive, so I grabbed her, started swimming back and she started gurgling... gasping for breath and tried to get someone to help me out."
Paramedics transported the woman to a local hospital, where she is listed in critical condition.
The woman's identity has not been released. It is unclear how she got into the water.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call Harbor Police at (619) 686-6272.
