SAN DIEGO - A young woman is recovering Monday after being forced to jump out of her moving car while on a freeway because her brakes and steering wheel reportedly failed.

The incident was reported at 11 p.m. Sunday and took place on eastbound state Route 94 just west of the Spring Street exit.

A witness told 10News that the woman's Ford Escort was going at about 45 mph when she jumped out. The witness said the driver slid down the freeway and hit her head on a wooden pole.

The witness said that the woman told him her steering wheel locked up and that her brakes went out.

The woman, who sustained scrapes and bruises, was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital.
