Woman gives birth in car off SR-125 in La Mesa

LA MESA, Calif. - A Chula Vista father's nerves are settling after he had to deliver his own baby during rush hour traffic on state Route 125 in La Mesa Monday afternoon.

Mother Kayla Hernandez talked to 10News from her hospital room just hours after giving birth in the front seat of her Chevy Malibu.

She told 10News Anchor Itica Milanes, "I was just like hurry up! Hurry up, get there!"

Kayla, her husband Albert and their 9-year-old daughter Rosalie were racing to Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa at about 4:30 p.m.

"I had him turn the music on just to try to keep my mind off of it," Kayla said.

But the laid-back reggae tunes were not doing the trick.

"I was trying to keep her calm and me calm at the same time and trying to go like 80 miles an hour, trying to cut through traffic," said Albert.

Kayla added, "Hitting 94 and Jamacha right then and there, I knew that I wasn't going to make it."

So, Albert pulled the car over.

"I jumped out and went around and opened her door and put my hand under her head. She pushed and she just slid right on out. I caught her and then I placed her on her chest," Albert told 10News.

He said he caught her like a football, except this football weighed 8 pounds, 12 ounces.

The baby was not waiting for anyone. She came out in the passenger side of her parents' brand new car.

Nine-year-old Rosalie said, "I was actually crying because it freaked me out so much. I've never seen it happen before."

Seconds later, paramedics were there. It just so happened, they stopped across the street from a fire station.

An emergency medical technician cut the umbilical cord and then brought the mother and baby to the hospital.

"I thought, 'Wow!' Because my mind got blown! It was cool," Rosalie said.

Looking back, Albert said, "I mean, it was the greatest feeling in the world. At the same time I was a little anxious. My hands were numb, heavy breathing."

He said he and his new daughter will always share a special bond. The couple named the baby Kassie Gianna.

Her original due date was May 12.
