Woman convicted of practicing medicine without license arrested again

Kathleen Helms accused of posing as doctor again

SAN DIEGO - A North County woman convicted of posing as a doctor and practicing medicine without a license has been arrested again, a source told 10News.

Kathleen Helms, 59, was taken into custody at the San Ysidro Port of Entry at 3 a.m. Sunday, 10News learned.

Customs officials noticed that she had a warrant out for her arrest and transported her to Las Colinas Women's Detention Facility in Santee, where she is being held without bail.

On Monday afternoon, 10News anchor Itica Milanes spoke with one of Helms' victims who recently spotted her working under a different name.

The victim said Helms was operating under Sandee Boyko at a health center in Hillcrest. This time she was claiming to be a nutritionist, herbalist and healthcare practitioner.

When 10News talked to Helms in 2012 while she was in jail, she said, "I am completely innocent of all charges."

The FBI arrested her for posing as a doctor of naturopath and misleading people into believing they had Lyme disease.

Helms claimed to be treating patients with bovine stem cells from Germany. The FBI said she advised patients to go to Tijuana to have a catheter inserted in their arm so she could give them expensive, experimental treatments intravenously.

Helms called the arrest an FBI conspiracy, saying, "They go in and take them, shut them down, hold them at gunpoint, take everything away and scare the hell out them."

One of her patients got so sick a doctor gave her just hours to live because her organs were shutting down. She survived but only after months of intense treatment.

Helms pleaded guilty to four counts of practicing medicine without a license. She was sentenced to three years in prison.

However, the judge allowed her to split that sentence by serving 18 months in jail and 18 months of supervised probation.

The San Diego County District Attorney's Office said Helms is charged with two new counts of practicing medicine without a license and violating her probation.

She is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday.
