CHULA VISTA - A man beat a woman with a brick in Chula Vista early Wednesday, landing him in jail and sending her to the hospital, police said.
The crime happened around 6:40 a.m. in the 100 block of Twin Oaks Circle.
Neighbors told police they heard screaming and called 911. When officers arrived, they found the man on top of the woman. They say he "had his knee in her throat."
The man was arrested and the woman was taken to a hospital. She is in an induced coma due to her injuries. At last check, she had taken a turn for the worse and had to have a second surgery. She has head injuries that are described as critical.
According to police, the two had been divorced and had not had contact until recently. Officers told 10News the man, later identified as Rand Huffman, had contact with their son because of a civil case involving a business. The couple's son was sleeping in the house during the attack and did not hear what was happening outside.
Wednesday afternoon, police were searching not only the home where the attack occurred, but Huffman's home in Glendora and his vehicle.
