Woman awakes to find intruder in Chula Vista bedroom

Incident may have been a misunderstanding

CHULA VISTA, Calif. - A reported sexual assault incident in Chula Vista may actually be a major misunderstanding.

Chula Vista police were called to the 700 block of Dorothy Street shortly after 4:00 a.m. Wednesday after a woman was awakened by a stranger touching her in her room as she slept. The man took off running when the woman screamed.

Police searched for clues and questioned neighbors, and investigators believed the man got into the woman's home through an unlocked sliding glass door.

As 10News reporter Joe Little was shooting video of the apartment complex, two people started talking nearby. One of them was the victim's brother; the other was the suspect's mother.

Little had his camera on as the brother said the man, identified as Diego, tried to touch his sister.

The mother said Diego thought he was invited over. The mother said she was aware of a text message conversation the brother and Diego had that night.

The brother questioned why Diego touched his sister, took $5 out of her room and took off running.

The mother said Diego, who is 18 years old, was just released from Juvenile Hall a week earlier.

Police said the man would probably be arrested.

His mother told Little she thought the entire thing was a misunderstanding.
