SAN DIEGO - 10News has uncovered new information about the woman accused of shooting and killing her boyfriend in their Del Cerro condo late Saturday evening.
Megan Fletcher had just passed the bar exam and was excited to start her new career as a lawyer. Now, the 29-year-old is sitting in the Las Colinas Detention Center facing a charge of first-degree murder.
A neighbor told 10News she heard Fletcher and her boyfriend, Chris Black, having a knock-down, drag-out fight in their condo on Adobe Falls Road.
"I heard a lot of crying and sobbing and her saying, 'Stop, this happens every time,'" said neighbor Cynthia Sartuche.
She said the couple had been drinking and fighting for about 45 minutes.
"I heard a lot of scurrying around from one area of the condo to the other, door open and then being slammed shut several times," she said.
As soon as Sartuche told her boyfriend to call 911, she said she heard a pop.
"Then I heard her going, 'No, no, please come on,'" said Sartuche.
Police said the couple struggled with a gun and Black was shot at least once in the chest. Sartuche said just before police arrived, they heard a second pop.
Black was alive when he was taken to the hospital, but he died Sunday morning.
10News tracked down a close friend of the 28-year-old who said Black had just returned from a job as a civilian contractor in Afghanistan on March 14. He retired from the Army in 2009 and moved to San Diego to work for General Atomics as an imagery analyst. His girlfriend had just passed the state bar exam in December and was volunteering for an organization that provides legal help for those with HIV.
Looking back, Sartuche cannot help but think about the bullets fired just above her head that night.
"I thought, 'Oh my God. There is only 5 and a half inches of wood between the condos,'" she said. "The bullet could have come through because they were right above us."
The neighbor said police were called to the couple's home a few months ago for another fight.
Fletcher is scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday.
