White-out conditions hinder search for missing climber Kinley Adams on Oregon's Mount Hood

National Guard helicopter on standby

PORTLAND, Ore. - The family of a climber lost since Saturday on Oregon's Mount Hood is holding out hope he'll be found alive.

Searchers looking for 59-year-old Kinley Adams were frustrated Monday and Tuesday by white-out conditions. They're hoping for clearing weather. A National Guard helicopter is on standby.

The wife of the Salem dentist, Lorraine Adams, and their two sons went to the mountain Tuesday. They told reporters they're optimistic Adams is alive in a snow cave.

Most climbers summit the mountain about 50 miles east of Portland in the spring. Climbing the 11,239-foot Mount Hood becomes riskier as warming temperatures melt ice and loosen rocks.
