NELSON, Ga. - The Georgia town of Nelson may become the second in the state to require its citizens to own a gun.

The Nelson City Council gave preliminary approval to a law requiring the head of the household to have a firearm and ammunition.

The council said it's a message to lawmakers who want to restrict gun ownership.

The Nelsoon law would still prevent felons from having a gun and would permit anyone opposed to firearms to be exempted from the law.

The town of Kennesaw in Georgia has had a gun requirement since the 1980s.
