Firefighters battled a canyon fire on Friday that burned thick brush and trees behind two apartment complexes in Vista.

The fire was reported at about 7:30 p.m. in the 1000 block of Meadowlake Drive near Brengle Terrace Park in Vista.Residents say the flames were more than 20 feet high. Embers from the burning trees briefly ignited one apartment's roof, but crews quickly put it out. Crews evacuated two apartment buildings at about 8:25 p.m.Firefighters contained the fire to about one acre. It took them about 20 minutes to put the fire out.There is no official word on what sparked the fire, but residents living in one of the apartment complexes said they heard fireworks just before the fire started.Residents were allowed back into their apartments at about midnight.
