SAN MARCOS, Calif. - A vigil was held Sunday night in San Marcos for an eight year old girl clinging to life, and her mother, who was killed in a brutal attack last week.
41-year-old Antonia Duran was murdered last Tuesday, stabbed 22 times inside her home, while her
8-year-old daughter, Azalia Duran, was stabbed 26 times.
Azalia remains in a medically-induced coma at Rady Children's Hospital.
10News was inside the courtroom last Thursday as 28-year-old Daniel Hernandez, accused of the stabbings, made his first court appearance in front of a judge.
Family members tell 10News that Hernandez and Antonia Duran had only known each other for two months.
Antonia’s cousin told 10News on Sunday that most of Antonia's family had never even met Hernandez.
The funeral for Antonia will be Friday. Plans are still being finalized.
Family tell us that Azalia, known as Zellie to them, will remain at Rady Children's Hospital for a least several more months.
When she wakes up from that coma, they hope to have a Christmas celebration for her, one she'll never forget.
An account has been set up for Azalia's recovery, as well as a trust fund for all three of Antonia’s children.
A trust fund has been set up at Chase Bank for Azalia, it’s account number 96-3522594. The account for all three children is account number 3016833591.
Also, Cal Community Bank in Vista is collecting gifts for Christmas for Azalia, so she can receive them all when she wakes up.
