SAN DIEGO - A driver trying to avoid a couch on the roadway lost control of her vehicle and plunged about 60 feet down a culvert off westbound Interstate 8 in the Del Cerro area.
The incident happened at about 11:40 a.m. Monday off I-8 near Waring Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
“At the last minute, noticed there was a couch on the freeway, started swerving back and forth to avoid it,” described Benjamin Contreras, who saw the entire incident while driving in a nearby lane. “Went over to the side, hit the embankment, went up in the air, rolled three times and then went over the embankment down into the ditch.”
Emergency crews were quickly summoned to the scene to rescue the driver.
“This is right here is a classic case of why we should be wearing seatbelts,” said Capt. Buzz Miller, who is with the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
The driver, Ana Baglietto, was wearing her seatbelt. Her car was totaled. She only complained of head and neck pain.
“When we found her she was on the phone to her mother so that was helping out,” said a smiling Miller.
Crews were able to extract the woman from her vehicle. She was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital and was later released.
No other injuries were reported.
