ESCONDIDO, Calif. - A car crashed into an Escondido apartment building on Tuesday evening, police said.

The crash occurred at about 8:30 p.m. in the 500 block of North Date Street, near East Washington Avenue.

Police said a silver BMW crashed into the sliding glass door of a unit on the first floor of a two-story apartment building. Four or five people – including children – were inside the unit at the time of the crash.

Eight-year-old Karina was inside doing her homework when the crash occurred.

"And then, all of the sudden, it felt like it was an earthquake," she said.

The BMW's driver tried to run away from the scene but was detained by witnesses until police arrived.

Police said the driver suffered a head injury that was not from the crash but from the witnesses who detained him.

The driver was then taken to Palomar Hospital to be treated. No one else was injured, according to the Escondido Fire Department.

Witnesses said there were multiple people inside the car that ran away after the crash.

Two units were damaged. It is unclear how many people were displaced.

What caused the crash is under investigation.
