SAN DIEGO - A man was hospitalized Tuesday after crashing his van into an Ocean Beach skatepark.

The incident occurred at about 3 a.m. off of Bacon Street. Police believe the 62-year-old driver failed to slow down when turning from westbound Interstate 8 onto Sunset Cliffs Boulevard and slammed into a concrete barricade.

The initial impact launched the van into the air and over two metal fences. At that point, the van appeared to have flipped in the air. It came to a stop inside the skatepark.

Emergency workers transported the driver to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Marcus Adair pulled over and parked just to take a look. He said seeing the van in the park made it hard for him to believe.

"It's just mind-blowing," Adair said. "[It is] unthinkable in my opinion… I think it’s amazing that the guy is all right. I mean, it’s one of the oddest things I’ve ever seen."

A dog that was inside the van during the crash was also injured. The county's Department of Animal Services is caring for the dog on at their center on Gaines Street. Officials told 10News the dog is expected to be OK.
