Museum spokesman Scott McGaugh tells U-T San Diego that between June 1, 2011, and May 31, visitors to the historic aircraft carrier topped the million mark by 2,000.

Since it opened eight years ago, the previous high mark was 941,000.

Midway president and CEO Mac McLaughlin says the figure represents a milestone for the nation's fleet of historic naval ships.

McGaugh says about 12 percent of the ship's visitors are from abroad and about a quarter are under age 17.

He says expansion plans are under way with a theater scheduled to open in 2014.
