The guided-missile frigate USS Gary deployed from Naval Station San Diego Friday for a drug interdiction mission in the eastern Pacific Ocean.

The ship will work with a U.S. Coast Guard law enforcement squad that will conduct boarding operations.

"Due to the constantly evolving nature of narcotics smuggling, USS Gary always expects to encounter new tactics employed by traffickers," said its commanding officer, Cmdr. Christopher Budde. "We will be tested in all warfare areas as we deter and disrupt the movement of illicit narcotics over the sea."

The last time the Gary conducted such a mission -- two years ago -- 6.5 tons of cocaine was seized.

The ship of 25 officers and 200 enlisted sailors will relieve the frigate USS Jarrett.
