USD Receives $3M Donation From Benefactor

Gift Comes From Estate Of Late Coronado Resident Frances Harpst

The University of San Diego received a $3 million gift from the estate of a longtime benefactor, it was announced Monday.

The donation came from the estate of Frances Harpst, a Coronado resident who died in April at the age of 83.

"We are exceedingly grateful to Mrs. Harpst for her extraordinary generosity and her consideration of some of USD's most distinctive programs and priorities over the years," said Mary Lyons, the school's president. "We are privileged to memorialize her abiding support and encouragement with the naming of the Center for Catholic Thought and Culture in her honor."

The 2-year-old facility is a campus center of Catholic intellectual, social, cultural and spiritual traditions.

Harpst previously helped fund chairs in Catholic theology and the Choral Scholars Endowment Fund.

The gift will partially endow the center's annual programs and supplement scholarships, said Gerard Mannion, the center's director.
