Tornado touches down in El Reno, suburb of Oklahoma City; claims at least 9 victims

EL RENO, Okla. - A series of violent tornadoes slashing through central Oklahoma Friday have claimed its at least nine victims.

Amy Elliott, with the Oklahoma Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed Saturday morning seven more people also died in the storms.

The victims include two children and seven adults. Five of the victims have yet to be identified. Their names and where they died have not yet been released as they await notify family.

Officials with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol confirmed to NBC affiliate KFOR in Oklahoma City that a mother and child were killed near a vehicle in the El Reno area Friday night.

The Oklahoma State Department of Health reported 104 injuries Saturday morning were treated. 

The National Weather Service issued a tornado emergency for the city's downtown, airport and several suburbs as the storm rolled through central Oklahoma.

Trooper Betsy Randolph said numerous vehicles were damaged in the storm and that many motorists are stranded. The Weather Channel's Mike Bettes was in El Reno tracking a tornado when he and the other two weather vehicles accompanying him found themselves in its path.
