College student, intruder killed in NY break-in

UNIONDALE, N.Y. - Hofstra University says the name of the student killed in an early morning break-in at an off-campus house is Andrea Rebello.

Authorities say a masked gunman involved in a robbery attempt was also killed in what they described as a police-involved shooting.

The 21-year-old Rebello was a junior and a public relations major at the New York college.

She was killed during an attempted robbery in the home she shared with her sister and several other Hofstra students.

Nassau County Police say a masked gunman entered the home at about 2:30 a.m. An unidentified woman in the house was permitted to leave. That woman then called 911. When police arrived, gunshots erupted, leaving Rebello and the gunman dead.

The investigation is ongoing.
