ELYRIA, Ohio - Five people, ages 28, 25, 7, 2 and 2 months old, were taken to an Elyria hospital after their trailer caught fire on Pennsylvania Avenue just after 3 a.m. Monday.
According to Dara Taylor, the grandmother of the three children, her 7-year-old grandson, Dicoda, was sleeping on a couch and woke up to fire in the kitchen area. Dicoda told Taylor that he was able to crawl from the front of the trailer to wake his parents who were sleeping in the rear of the trailer.
Taylor said that her son, 28, was able to break out a window and help the mother, 25, out of the burning trailer. Taylor's son then handed each kid out the window to the mother before escaping himself.
Taylor gives a lot of credit to the Dicoda's kindergarten teacher who she believes taught him how to handle a situation like the one he faced Monday morning.
"I crawled under the fire," Dicoda told CNN. "I had to cover my mouth like this ... to keep me from breathing in the smoke."
All five people were taken to the hospital with smoke inhalation but none of their conditions were life threatening, according to the Elyria Fire Department.
