SAN DIEGO – A U-Haul truck smashed into a fire hydrant in El Cajon Tuesday morning, creating a geyser that buckled a busy roadway.

At around midnight, a man who was staying in a nearby motel in the 400 block of West Main Street was asked to move his truck. While backing up, he knocked a hydrant clean off its base, witnesses told El Cajon police.

The collision sent want shooting 30 feet into the air. Helix Water Department and Heartland Fire & Rescue crews responded and shut off the water within about 45 minutes, but not before it had buckled and damaged the roadway.

The water damage closed one eastbound lane of traffic in the area where El Cajon Boulevard turns into West Main Street.

Crews were hoping to have the road fully reopened sometime Tuesday morning. However, repairs to the sidewalk and hydrant could take several days longer.

No charges were filed against the driver.
