2 suspects in Poway area burglary series arrested

Residents still on edge as burglaries continue

SAN DIEGO - Two men were arrested in connection with a series of home burglaries in the Poway area, authorities announced Wednesday.

According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, 24-year-old Stephen Black and 45-year-old Richard Thomason were arrested in late July and are accused in a burglary spree that began in May.

Sheriff's Det. Sgt. Chad Boudreau told 10News, "We did have a residential series toward the end of May to July; seven here in the city of Poway and San Diego Police Department had a few, but it was a daytime residential series where a couple of men were breaking into houses, stealing jewelry and electronics."

Authorities said the men may have also burglarized homes in Rancho Bernardo, Scripps Ranch, Rancho Penasquitos and Mira Mesa.

Resident Derek McGee told 10News, "There's been three (burglaries); my next-door neighbor and the lady next door in the last two weeks. We had a break-in around the corner about two months ago; that's when it started."

Resident Patricia Helsing was upstairs in her home when she was victimized.

"Someone came in. Our garage door was half open, someone came in under the garage door, stole a check, my iPads, my docking station and left," Helsing said.

"I'm pretty concerned, [I've] got little kids here in kindergarten and I don't have a dog, so very concerned," said McGee.

Helsing added, "We don't keep our garage door open anymore, not even halfway. In this heat, we keep it closed completely."
