Turn in a gun, get a gift card

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department wants to give you a gift card for your gun.

On Saturday the sheriff’s department and the United African American Ministerial Action Council (UAAMAC) will give a $100 gift card to anyone who brings in a handgun, rifle or shotgun, no questions asked. An assault weapon will get you a $200 card.

The cards can be used at area grocery stores. All the collected weapons will be destroyed.

The sheriff’s department has $15,000 worth of gift cards to give out. It raised the money using asset forfeiture funds. This is the fifth year of the program. So far, more than 1,000 weapons have been turned in.

The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the BRYCO Building at 5275 Market St.

Participants should place their unloaded guns in their trunk. For questions call the UAAMAC at 619-264-1213.
