Trial begins Monday for 2 accused in killing of young mother

VISTA - Opening statements are scheduled today in the trial of two ex-cons accused of killing a 20-year-old woman whose bullet-riddled body was found on an Escondido roadside in 2012.
Jeffrey Steven McCreary, 44, and Destin Lee Withers, 38, are each charged with murder in the 2012 shooting death of Morayma Denise Rodriguez. Her remains were found around 1:15 p.m. Feb. 1 near the Lawrence Welk Resort.
The night before her body was found, Rodriguez told her family she was going to a casino with friends.
Several witnesses testified at an earlier hearing that Rodriguez told friends several days before she was killed that someone gave her drugs against her will and raped her, and that Withers was trying to help her find that person.
Rodriguez's daughter was 11 months old when her mother was killed.
McCreary, the alleged gunman, has a criminal history that includes armed robberies, weapon and drug possessions, and buying stolen goods. He faces 100 years to life in prison if convicted. The maximum punishment for Withers, whose criminal past includes stealing cars, would be 28 years to life if he's convicted.
