Palm tree fire in Oak Park that damaged vehicles, house being investigated as arson

Firefighters say accelerant sprayed on palm trees

SAN DIEGO - A palm tree fire in Oak Park that sent burning fronds falling onto nearby vehicles and a house is being investigated as arson.

The fire was initially reported in the 2300 block of 54th Street just after 10 p.m. When crews arrived, they found two palm trees on fire with the fronds falling. Crews were able to knock down the fire by about 10:30 p.m.

Damage to the vehicles and home appeared to be minor. The Red Cross was not called to assist any residents with shelter. No injuries were reported.

The fire is being investigated as arson. Firefighters say someone sprayed accelerant onto the palm trees, which then caught on fire.

Firefighters say a bush in a nearby median was also set on fire. They say Monday night's incidents appeared to be similar to a string of fires in the same area last week.
