Traffic signal proposal draws mixed reviews in Scripps Ranch

SAN DIEGO - A proposed set of traffic signals in Scripps Ranch is drawing mixed reviews. The stoplights are planned at the foot of Hibert Street where it meets Mira Mesa Boulevard, just east of Interstate 15.
There are frequent back-ups along that stretch of roadway and motorists often have to make a U-turn.
The San Diego City Council is scheduled to vote on Monday regarding adding a set of stoplights midway between two that are about a block and a half apart.
Lisa Asaro told 10News, "Something has to be fixed right there. It's dangerous pulling out of this shopping center and everyone making a U-turn right up at the light. Something has to be done…I'm just not sure about the three lights."
For many, that is the issue: one light, followed by another and another.
Jim Carroll said enough is enough.
"I think it's too many lights, too close," he said. "We already have enough stoplights."
Brian Suggett agreed.
"I don't think it'd be a good idea," Suggett told 10News. "I think it would cause too much traffic to back up."
The idea is to allow left turns and cut back on U-turns, improving safety.
Bob Ilko is president of the Scripps Ranch Civic Association.
"The Denny's and cleaners don't have a safe left turn coming out," Ilko said. "They have to cross three lanes, make a left and cross three more lanes. It'll allow them to make a left and/or a U-turn at a signal light."
James Parenci owns San Diego Games and Comics inside that shopping center and he is all in favor.
"I think it's a great idea," he said. "There are a lot of people that cut in between the center cones, whatever they want to do, and it’s a lot of accidents."
Carroll added, "Having a light there would be convenient for residents."
Ilko was assured that all three sets of lights would be synchronized.
"From the I-15 to Hibert (Street) to Scripps Ranch Boulevard," he said.
The costs of the lights and median project are already funded through developer fees and assessments.
