Toddler struck by car in Escondido

Police say car was backing out of driveway

ESCONDIDO, Calif. - A 2-year-old child was struck by a car backing out of driveway in Escondido on Sunday and sustained major head injuries, police said.

The driver was backing out of the driveway in the 800 block of East Ohio Avenue near South Elm Street about 11 a.m. and struck the toddler, Escondido police Sgt. Scott Walters said.

The driver had not been cited, and it was unclear what if any relation the driver was to the child, according to Walters.

Walters said the toddler was being flown from the helipad at Palomar Medical Center downtown to Rady Children's Hospital. The child's mother was en route as well, he said.

10News learned the child is in fair condition and is expected to be OK.
