Summer vacation is over for thousands of South Bay children, as Sweetwater Union High School District and Chula Vista Elementary School District students heading back to school Wednesday morning.

Both districts are under year-round school schedules, and Castle Park Middle School science teacher Shannon Chamberlin said, "I love it because six weeks is enough of a break, and then by the time September comes, you're ready for another break."

"With this kind of a schedule, you have a more even keel," added Sweetwater Union High School District Superintendent Karen Janney, Ed.D.

Neither district has new schools opening this year, but CVESD began construction this spring on its 46th school, Saburo Muraoka Elementary. The school is scheduled to open next school year.

SUHSD begins the year with new school boundaries that faced a lot of negative feedback from families in eastern Chula Vista.

Janney said there are no immediate plans to build a much-needed middle and high school on the city's eastern side.

"It is something we need. We just don't have the answer yet," she said.

SUHSD did free up $62.2 million in bond money to make improvements to existing schools.

"HVAC or air conditioning at campuses will be started this year. Improvements of school facilities at a variety of schools," said Janney.
