Thousands of San Diegans may be eligible to get free solar panels on their homes but they don’t know about the program.  GRID Alternatives San Diego said Tuesday it has installed free solar panels on more than 800 homes.

“We just believe that the solar energy revolution should include everyone,” said Emma Higgins of GRID Alternatives.

Tuesday, volunteers with GRID Alternatives and Sunpower installed 12 panels on a Valencia Park home owned by Michael Haynes.

“It’s a game changer,” said Haynes.  “[It will save] at least a 150 bucks a month.”

“It can actually be the difference in extreme cases between losing a house and keeping your home,” said Higgins.

Only certain San Diegans will qualify.  A spokeswoman said you must own and live in your own home, have a household income that is 80% or below the area median income, and live in a home that would be defined as “affordable housing.”

“We rely on a lot of community and national partners,” said Higgins.
