Fans help pay for Chopper the Biker Dog's surgery

Goodwill dog to have tumor removed Friday

SAN DIEGO - Chopper the Biker Dog needed a hug, and he got a big one from his social media followers.

Last week, Chopper's sidekick Mark Shaffer posted on the Boston terrier's Facebook page the dog had a tumor in his neck.

"It needs to come out, otherwise it will continue growing in there," Shaffer told 10News reporter Joe Little.

But Shaffer and Chopper – who spends his days visiting seniors, kids at Rady Children's Hospital or injured military personnel – could not afford the surgery.

A few hours after mentioning the surgery on Facebook, more than $10,000 had been raised and Chopper's surgery was paid for.

"I get very choked up thinking about that many people, you know, caring about this little dog," said Shaffer.

Shaffer told 10News he is grateful and thankful for the kindness of everyone who donated to help his dog.

Chopper is expected to have surgery on Friday morning. He is expected to make a full recovery.
