Teen seriously hurt in fall off La Jolla cliff

LA JOLLA - A teen was seriously injured after falling more than 75 feet off a cliff in La Jolla Tuesday night.

According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief David Gerboth, a group of teens were at the cliff’s edge off the 1500 block of Coast Boulevard when the 18-year-old man somehow fell at about 10:50 p.m. The victim landed on a rocky shoreline 75 to 90 feet below.

His friends called 911 and a fire-rescue chopper was dispatched.

“It’s a rock cliff face,” Gerboth said. “He landed at the bottom of the rocks right at the tideline with the tide coming up. It was imperative that he be extricated quickly. That’s why we used a helicopter.”

He was rescued by helicopter and transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla with life-threatening head injuries.

His name was not immediately released.
