CHULA VISTA, Calif. - A missing 16-year-old girl was found seriously injured in Otay Lakes County Park near Chula Vista and later died, prompting sheriff's homicide detectives to open an investigation, a lieutenant said Tuesday.
Homicide detectives were investigating because the circumstances surrounding the incident were unknown and because the victim was a minor, sheriff's Lt. Glenn Giannantonio said.
The girl was found in an area at the base of the Upper Otay Lakes Dam at 5:53 p.m. Monday, shortly after she was reported missing, Giannantonio said.
10News learned that the teen fell about 75 feet and she was submerged in water up to her neck. She also suffered from injuries to the head and a broken leg and hip, 10News learned.
She was hoisted from the dam's base and taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital, where she later died from her injuries, according to the lieutenant. Her name was not immediately released.
