Police are investigating a gang-related shooting in Logan Heights that claimed the life of a 17-year-old boy and left his 18-year- old friend wounded. The shooting occurred in the 3200 block of Imperial Avenue around 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, said San Diego police Lt. Kevin Rooney. The victims were standing in the 3200 block of Imperial Avenue when they were approached by a group believed to have consisted of eight males, he said. "The larger group made a gang reference to the victims," and one of its members produced a weapon and opened fire, Rooney said. The victims ran up a set of stairs from Imperial Avenue to a trolley station at 3200 Commercial St. and collapsed, Rooney said, and the assailants scattered. Keuane Kirksey of El Cajon was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:25 p.m., according to medical examiner Investigator Jennifer Thompson. The 18-year-old underwent surgery and is expected to survive, Rooney said. Anyone with information on the shooting was urged to call the San Diego Police Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293, or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-TIPS.
