Sweetwater District school board to have new look

Four out of five board members have been suspended

CHULA VISTA, Calif. - A local school board that had some of its members involved in a corruption and bribery scandal will have a new look when it meets again on May 28.

Four members of the San Diego County Board of Education begin sitting on the Sweetwater Union High School Board of Trustees until voters elect new members in November.

Only one trustee remains of the five Sweetwater board members after four pleaded guilty to a variety of charges, stemming from a corruption and bribery scandal. The board members were automatically suspended by the district after their guilty pleas were submitted.

"It's time to focus on the children, make them the priority," said John McCann, the sole remaining board member.

"We're ready for the action," said interim Sweetwater board member Susan Hartley, who is also the president of the County Board of Education.

Mark Anderson, Sharon Jones and Lyn Neylon will join Hartley on the board.

Sweetwater Education Association President Roberto Rodriguez had mixed emotions about the temporary board.

"Whether it's good or bad, we don't know," he said. "But it's good to move past the corruption issues."

"We have to be really sure that we know the issues, that we're informed on the issues, so that we can make the best decision for kids," said Hartley.

Voters could elect five new school board members in November if McCann is successful in his bid for Chula Vista City Council.
