Escondido SWAT standoff ends with suspect's mysterious escape

ESCONDIDO, Calif. - After a more than five-hour standoff with who authorities thought was an armed 17-year-old holed up in an apartment, a SWAT team finally forced their way in to find the suspect gone.

The incident began at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Hidden Villas Apartments in the 900 block of East Mission Avenue when Escondido police officers got a tip that a teen believed to be a suspect with a recent assault with a deadly weapon was in the area.

According to Escondido police, when officers tried to arrest him, he fled into a nearby unit.

There was a fear that the teen may be armed. The complex was evacuated, police set up a perimeter and called in a SWAT team to try and coax him teenager from the apartment. Mission Avenue at North Cedar Street was blocked off.

At about midnight, an Escondido SWAT team finally forced its way in to the unit to find it empty.

The suspect’s name has not been released because he is a juvenile.
