Suspicious object discovery forces closure of I-5 off-ramp to Sea World Drive

Object later ruled harmless

SAN DIEGO - A suspicious object that prompted authorities to close the northbound Interstate 5 off-ramp to Sea World Drive was deemed harmless following an investigation.

The discovery was reported at about 2:20 p.m., and the California Highway Patrol issued a Sig Alert as all lanes were blocked due to the investigation.

San Diego Fire-Rescue Department crews and a bomb squad responded, and following a nearly one-hour probe, it was determined that the object was made of plastic and metal and wires sticking out of it. Authorities said they believe the object is a battery charger.

There were no reports of injuries or property damage.

The investigation was wrapping up as of 3:25 p.m., with all lanes expected to reopen shortly after.
