Suspected DUI driver backs SUV into bush in Spring Valley

SPRING VALLEY, Calif. - A man is under arrest on a DUI charge after he lost control of his SUV, which nearly  rolled down a hill and into a home in Spring Valley.

The incident was reported at 2 a.m. in the 3400 block of Scenic Terrace.

According to witnesses, the driver stalled his Ford Explorer and somehow rolled backwards and crashed into some bushes. The SUV ended up getting stuck in the brush on top of a hill just above a home.

The family inside the house woke up to the noise and rushed out.

“We were sleeping in bed and my wife suddenly woke up and next thing you’d know there are taillights through the window,” said Mark Schenck, the homeowner.

A woman who was a passenger in the SUV tried to flee the scene. Schenck said he and his wife were shocked to see their daughter chase after the passenger to get her to stay on scene.

"The other person tried to run and my daughter took off after them," said Schenck. "[My daughter] is 11."

Both were later found about a block away.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the driver still behind the wheel. At first, he argued with officers, but he was eventually handcuffed and taken away.

Schenck told 10News he had been worried about someone crashing into the brush.

"This is what we were worried about the whole time because our bed is right next to the street," he said.

Schenck said they have been asking to put up a barrier to prevent a car from coming down the hill and crashing into their home.
